Future Global Megatrends, Development Cooperation and Security

1. Oktober 2022 @ 14:30 - 15:30

Englisch:

The flood disaster in Pakistan, drought and famine in the Horn of Africa, and melting glaciers in the European Alps show how climate change as a global cross-cutting issue affects policy areas at all levels. In Bonn, UN location and city of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these interrelationships are being explored in particular from a development policy perspective. German and international development cooperation face the challenge of countering the consequences of climate change and its impact on the environment, societies and, of course, resources, and of developing strategies that, in line with Agenda 2030, enable a socially and globally just transformation to sustainability.
Complementing the discussions on interactions with security policy issues, Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Director of the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and CASSIS Center Council member, will reflect on the development policy dimension of strategic sustainability research in her presentation followed by a discussion. She will highlight which areas of international development policy are particularly concerned with the impacts of climate change and which countries and regions need to be prioritized for the long term, in addition to short-term humanitarian aid. It discusses the tasks and challenges of international cooperation in the face of current multiple crises and reflects on the significance of the „turn of the times“ for global cooperation structures in general and for German development cooperation in particular.
As a global megatrend, climate change affects all policy areas. In the city of COP 23, we invite you to this lecture to take the development perspective of strategic sustainability research and to actively participate in the discussion. Last but not least, this input informs our workshop on Strategic Foresight (by invitation only), which develops alternative scenarios and sustainable strategies in the nexus of climate change and security.

Deutsch:

The Bonn Future Lab is a new multi-day format consisting of two core segments: First, an international conference day, which will focus on global megatrends, especially from a security but also from a development perspective (in 2022: „Climate Change and Security“). In a second step, this international conference day will be combined with a Strategic Foresight Workshop, in which the techniques and methods of strategic foresight will be conveyed to young multipliers („decision-makers of the day after tomorrow“), who have previously gained an insight into the current scientific debates through the expert discussions with renowned national and international experts.
